Key opinion
Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris is a polarizing conclusion to the trilogy that shifts toward a dark, psychological, and atmospheric exploration of the kaiju genre. While some critics hail it as a masterpiece of design and thematic depth, others find the human-focused narrative and slow-burn approach to be tedious or poorly executed.
| Score | Ko Otani’s suspenseful and memorable musical score elevates the film's ominous atmosphere. | |
| Theme | The film explores complex themes of vengeance and moral ambiguity regarding Gamera's role as both savior and destroyer of humanity. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative focus on human psychology and the emotional turmoil of the character Ayana provides depth for some, while others find the human drama shallow and poorly acted. | |
| Production | Visual effects are highly divisive, ranging from being praised as groundbreaking and impressive for 1999 to being criticized as weak, rubbery, and visually unconvincing. | |
| Pacing | The deliberate, slow-burn pacing is perceived by some as an effective build-up of suspense and by others as exhausting and boring. | |
| Direction | Opinions on Shusuke Kaneko’s direction vary; supporters admire the darker, mystical vision, while detractors feel the film is a messy, unsatisfying decline from the previous entries. |
