Key opinion
(500) Days of Summer is widely praised as a refreshing, emotionally resonant subversion of traditional romantic comedies that effectively captures the complexities of modern relationships. While its non-linear narrative and lead performances are frequently highlighted as strengths, some viewers find the protagonists' immaturity and the lack of a conventional resolution to be alienating.
| Screenplay | The non-linear, fragmented narrative structure successfully avoids standard genre clichés and keeps the audience engaged. | |
| Score | The soundtrack is meticulously curated, with songs perfectly placed to mirror the emotional states of the characters. | |
| Acting | Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel provide standout, convincing performances that anchor the film's emotional core. | |
| Theme | The film's depiction of characters is divisive: many find them authentic and relatable, while others view them as infantile, aimless, or prone to poor communication. | |
| Ending | Opinions on the resolution are split; some appreciate the realistic, non-traditional ending, while others find it sudden, underdeveloped, or emotionally unsatisfying. |
