Key opinion
Absolution is widely perceived as a tedious and low-energy drama that misrepresents itself as an action-thriller. Critics and audiences alike feel that Liam Neeson's performance is hampered by a tired, derivative script and an unnecessarily sluggish pace.
| Originality | The film suffers from extreme low-originality, recycling the exhausted trope of a haunted, aging retiree seeking redemption. | |
| Pacing | The movie is misleadingly marketed as an action-thriller, when it is actually a sparse and frequently dull character drama with minimal kinetic energy. | |
| Acting | Liam Neeson's performance is polarizing; some critics find him weary and soulful in the film's second half, while others find him miscast, physically unconvincing, and lacking presence. | |
| Pacing | The film's slow, contemplative approach is divisive; it frustrates those expecting a traditional thriller, though a few viewers find the final emotional payoff rewarding. |
