After Earth is widely criticized for its thin screenplay, perceived nepotism, and inconsistent world-building. While some viewers appreciate its message of overcoming fear and its nature cinematography, many find the father-son dynamic and overall execution to be hollow and poorly realized.

| Acting | The performances are frequently described as a vanity project for the Smith family, with Jaden's acting range and Will's detached, over-stoic delivery drawing significant skepticism. | |
| Production | The film's visual presentation of Earth's wilderness and nature is a rare point of consensus, earning praise for its beauty and panoramic scope. | |
| Theme | Opinions on the thematic focus vary: some find the message of self-control and overcoming fear inspiring, while others dismiss the moralizing as superficial and poorly integrated into the narrative. | |
