Key opinion
Joe Wright’s adaptation of Anna Karenina polarizes audiences through its bold, avant-garde decision to stage the narrative within a decaying theater set. While many praise the film as a visually stunning and innovative reinterpretation, others find the stylistic artifice distracting and detrimental to the depth of Tolstoy’s original novel.
| Production | The unconventional theatrical staging is praised for its boldness and ability to mirror the suffocating nature of high-society artifice. | |
| Score | Dario Marianelli’s score is widely celebrated for its emotional resonance and ability to immerse viewers in the narrative. | |
| Acting | Jude Law’s performance as Karenin stands out as the most authentic and compelling portrayal among the cast. | |
| Adaptation | The fast-paced, condensed narrative leaves those unfamiliar with the source material feeling confused, while readers appreciate the attempt to distill a massive novel. | |
| Acting | Opinions on Keira Knightley’s performance vary between those who see a poignant, nuanced depiction of moral conflict and those who find it artificial and irritating. | |
| Direction | The highly stylized, balletic direction is lauded by some as a refreshing aesthetic triumph but dismissed by others as cold and lacking in emotional depth. |
