Imagine walking down the street and finding an unmarked VHS tape. Curiosity piqued, you take it home and pop it in. What starts off as two men screwing around with a video camera quickly transforms into an ultra-realistic torture sequence where the unidentified psychopaths tape their exploits as they torment and violate a woman tied to a chair. The devastation of your morals continues throughout the entirety of the footage, while subtly revealing the killer's shattered pasts via the interaction with their victims and each other.

August Underground is a divisive example of extreme pseudo-snuff that deliberately eschews traditional narrative in favor of gritty, found-footage realism. While some viewers appreciate its technical commitment to an authentic underground aesthetic, others dismiss it as vacuous, sadistic provocation lacking moral or cinematic substance.

Production The technical quality of the special effects is high, effectively creating a visceral, realistic depiction of gore and violence.
Cinematography The film utilizes an intentional home-video aesthetic to successfully mirror the chaotic, amateur quality of real-world found footage.
Screenplay The film lacks any traditional narrative structure, character development, or meaningful plot, leaving viewers with nothing but a series of sadistic encounters.
Theme The film's extreme, nihilistic focus on gratuitous violence divides audiences between those who view it as a challenging artistic exploration of depravity and those who find it morally reprehensible and aimless.
