When mankind beams a radio signal into space, a reply comes from ‘Planet G’, in the form of several alien crafts that splash down in the waters off Hawaii. Lieutenant Alex Hopper is a weapons officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones, part of an international naval coalition which becomes the world's last hope for survival as they engage the hostile alien force of unimaginable strength. While taking on the invaders, Hopper must also try to live up to the potential that his brother, and his fiancée's father—an Admiral—expect of him.

Battleship is widely regarded as a visually spectacular but narrative-deficient blockbuster that leans heavily on established sci-fi tropes. While audiences are divided on whether the film is a mindless disaster or a tongue-in-cheek parody of the genre, the consensus remains that its high-budget technical achievements cannot compensate for its shallow character development and illogical plot.

Cinematography The film excels as a technical showcase, featuring high-quality CGI and impressive large-scale naval action sequences.
Screenplay The screenplay is widely criticized for being nonsensical, filled with massive plot holes, and lacking any internal logical consistency.
Acting The performances are inconsistent, with established actors like Liam Neeson providing gravitas while other cast members are hampered by clichéd, unengaging character writing.
Originality The film is heavily derivative of other alien invasion blockbusters, with opinions split on whether this is an uninspired imitation or a deliberate, satirical pastiche of Michael Bay-style filmmaking.
Theme The heavy-handed focus on patriotism and American exceptionalism polarizes viewers, serving as a core thematic driver for some while feeling like a shallow trope to others.
