Key opinion
Beethoven's 2nd is generally regarded as a rare, successful sequel that effectively maintains the charm and spirit of its predecessor. While some viewers criticize its cartoonish tone and narrative absurdity, most audiences value it as a nostalgic, heartwarming family film with strong comedic moments.
| Acting | The returning cast, particularly Charles Grodin’s performance, provides a consistent and grounding anchor for the family dynamic. | |
| Score | Randy Edelman’s score successfully preserves the musical identity established in the first film. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay delivers clever, high-stakes humor that elevates the film above standard family fare. | |
| Direction | Opinions on the direction are divided; some praise the continuity of the original's lighthearted style, while others criticize the overuse of slow-motion and repetitive motifs. | |
| Originality | The depiction of the animals is a point of contention; some find the dogs' human-like expressions touching and funny, whereas others view the 'anthropomorphized' behavior as absurd and cartoonish. |
