Description
County Durham, England, 1984. The miners' strike has started and the police have started coming up from Bethnal Green, starting a class war with the lower classes suffering. Caught in the middle of the conflict is 11-year old Billy Elliot, who, after leaving his boxing club for the day, stumbles upon a ballet class and finds out that he's naturally talented. He practices with his teacher Mrs. Wilkinson for an upcoming audition in Newcastle-upon Tyne for the royal Ballet school in London.

Billy Elliot is widely celebrated as a poignant and emotionally resonant drama that effectively balances the gritty reality of a 1980s British mining community with an inspiring narrative of artistic pursuit. While some viewers find the plot trajectory predictable, the film's success is anchored by powerful performances and a heart-tugging exploration of familial sacrifice.
| Acting | Jamie Bell’s debut performance is a vibrant, fiercely committed portrayal that anchors the film with palpable passion for dance. | |
| Theme | The narrative effectively juxtaposes the stark, grim environment of the miners' strike with the elegant, transformative power of ballet. | |
| Emotion | The father-son dynamic and the eventual shift from parental opposition to self-sacrificing support provide the film's most moving emotional core. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is praised by many for its realistic character development, though others argue the "wonder-boy" rags-to-riches story relies on familiar tropes. | |
| Score | Opinions on the soundtrack are divided, with some viewers finding it a perfect, evocative match for the film while others feel it has become dated. | |
| Originality | While the film is seen as an accessible and touching slice of life, some reviewers find the inclusion of certain subplots, particularly those regarding Billy's friend Michael, to be either puzzling or narratively extraneous. |
