Key opinion
Takashi Miike’s adaptation of the classic manga is a visually stylish and action-heavy samurai film that leans into grotesque excess. While its choreography and lead performances are widely praised, critics are divided on whether the condensed narrative effectively captures the depth of the source material.
| Direction | The fight choreography is visceral, spontaneous, and effectively captures the brutal, manga-inspired nature of the source material. | |
| Acting | Takuya Kimura delivers a grounded and nuanced performance that grounds the film's more fantastical elements. | |
| Production | The film blends realistic period drama with stylized, grotesque visual flourishes, successfully translating the aesthetic of the manga to live-action. | |
| Screenplay | The dense narrative feels rushed, with many critics suggesting that the story requires more time than the two-hour runtime allows for full character development. | |
| Pacing | Opinions on the pacing are split: some find the two-and-a-half-hour runtime to be a gripping, effortless experience, while others find the narrative flow to be hindered by its length. | |
| Accessibility | The film's connection to the audience is divided; while enthusiasts of manga and Eastern cinema find it engaging, some viewers struggle to connect with its specific cultural stylings and tonal shifts. |
