Key opinion
Bones and All is a polarizing yet visually arresting blend of coming-of-age romance and visceral horror. While critics largely praise the lead performances and the film's atmospheric, arthouse sensibilities, some viewers find the narrative structure and thematic metaphors for adolescent alienation to be inconsistent or overly artificial.
| Acting | Taylor Russell delivers a standout, commanding performance that anchors the emotional core of the film. | |
| Cinematography | The cinematography effectively utilizes a gritty, 80s-inspired aesthetic that captures the desolate beauty of the American landscape. | |
| Acting | Mark Rylance’s portrayal of the antagonist Sully is deeply unsettling and magnetic, standing out as a highlight of the ensemble cast. | |
| Score | The film’s score by Reznor and Ross is highly effective, successfully enhancing the unsettling atmosphere and emotional weight. | |
| Originality | The narrative oscillates between being a poignant, unconventional love story and a redundant, derivative road movie, leaving opinions split on its originality. | |
| Screenplay | While some find the cannibalism metaphor a compelling vehicle for exploring identity and trauma, others perceive the screenplay’s dialogue and thematic metaphors as superficial or contrived. |
