Description
Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony joins his friend Dignan, who seems far less sane than the former. Dignan has hatched a harebrained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry.

Key opinion
Wes Anderson's debut is widely recognized as a charming, if unpolished, foundation for his later stylistic hallmarks, balancing youthful comedy with character-driven drama. While some critics find the script uneven and the narrative structure occasionally clumsy, most agree that the central performances of the Wilson brothers provide a heartfelt anchor to this tale of aspiring, inept criminals.
| Acting | Owen Wilson's portrayal of Dignan is a standout, widely viewed as a compelling and career-defining characterization. | |
| Direction | The film functions as a clear early display of Anderson's aesthetic, though it lacks the refined technical precision and stylistic maturity found in his later masterpieces. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is viewed as a mixture of inspired, humorous dialogue and structural incompleteness, with some finding the plot development erratic. | |
| Acting | The chemistry and performances of the Wilson brothers provide an essential emotional core that defines the film's tone. | |
| Pacing | The three-hour runtime (implied context) / overall pacing is polarizing, as the contemplative, low-stakes tempo rewards some viewers while leaving others feeling the narrative is unfocused. |
