Breakdown is widely regarded as a high-tension, expertly crafted road thriller that thrives on its realistic, stunt-heavy action and Kurt Russell's grounded performance. While some critics point to minor logic flaws or tropes, the consensus highlights the film's ability to turn a simple premise into an claustrophobic and gripping cinematic experience.

Acting Kurt Russell delivers an authentic performance as a vulnerable, non-superheroic protagonist, grounding the film's stakes in relatable desperation.
Production The film succeeds through practical, CGI-free stunt work and physical effects, particularly during the climactic chase.
Direction Jonathan Mostow’s direction effectively builds relentless, escalating tension within a sparse, atmospheric setting.
Screenplay The screenplay is praised for its simplicity and efficiency, though some viewers find the plot occasionally reliant on preposterous coincidences and continuity lapses.
