Capricorn One is a compelling 1970s political thriller that uses a faked Mars mission to explore post-Watergate distrust and government corruption. While critics praise its intellectual premise and atmospheric tension, opinions are split on its technical pacing and the realism of its investigative elements.

Theme The film effectively captures the paranoia of the post-Watergate era, offering a relevant and intelligent critique of government deception.
Acting The performances from the ensemble cast, particularly Hal Holbrook’s nuanced antagonist and Elliott Gould’s determined reporter, anchor the film’s high-stakes narrative.
Score Jerry Goldsmith's score is consistently highlighted as an atmospheric strength that elevates the film's suspense.
Pacing The film’s pacing divides viewers; some appreciate the methodical, character-driven build-up, while others find the dialogue-heavy sections slow and the tempo dated for modern audiences.
Screenplay Opinions on the screenplay are divided: supporters laud the intelligent, original concept, while critics point to implausibilities and a lack of procedural realism in the investigation.
