Key opinion
Casper is widely regarded as a nostalgic, emotionally resonant family film that transcends its simple genre to explore themes of grief and mortality. While the narrative is occasionally described as uneven or light, the strong performances and atmospheric production design earn it a lasting place in the hearts of those who grew up with it.
| Acting | Christina Ricci anchors the film with a compelling and mature performance that perfectly suits the gothic-adjacent setting. | |
| Production | The production design successfully captures a blend of eerie, gothic grandeur and warm, lived-in charm within the haunted mansion. | |
| Score | James Horner’s score effectively captures the film’s underlying melancholy and adds a layer of emotional weight to the story. | |
| Theme | The film succeeds in balancing its lighthearted comedic elements with unexpectedly poignant, mature reflections on death and the necessity of letting go. | |
| Originality | The visual effects are viewed through a lens of nostalgia; while some find them charmingly dated, others argue they were technically impressive for the mid-90s. |
