Key opinion
Citizen X is widely regarded as a compelling, respectful thriller that effectively dramatizes the hunt for Andrei Chikatilo while focusing on the investigator's struggle against Soviet bureaucracy. While praised for its strong performances and tense atmosphere, the film is frequently critiqued by those familiar with the setting for its historical inaccuracies and inconsistent representation of Soviet life.
| Acting | The performances from the lead cast, particularly Stephen Rea as the beleaguered investigator and Donald Sutherland as his pragmatic superior, anchor the film's emotional weight. | |
| Pacing | The film succeeds in maintaining a tense, atmospheric thriller momentum that avoids exploitative sensationalism. | |
| Production | While some viewers appreciate the production's attempt to capture a grim, decaying Soviet aesthetic on a limited budget, others find the details, such as uniforms and props, to be jarringly inaccurate or absurd. | |
| Adaptation | The narrative takes significant liberties with history, compressing timelines and misrepresenting the roles of forensic experts and police procedures for dramatic effect. |
