Key opinion
Come Away is widely criticized for its misleading marketing, which disguised a grim, realistic family drama as a whimsical children's fairy tale. The film's attempt to weave Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland into an origin story is largely viewed as disjointed, bleak, and lacking the magical wonder expected by its audience.
| Adaptation | Marketing the film as a fantastical Peter Pan/Alice crossover is universally panned as a deceptive strategy that alienated the target audience. | |
| Accessibility | The narrative's shift from potential whimsy to a bleak, heavy-handed drama about alcoholism, gambling, and family tragedy renders it unsuitable for children. | |
| Screenplay | The script is criticized for being incoherent and failing to meaningfully bridge the gap between its grounded Victorian reality and the titular fantasy elements. | |
| Production | Visual effects and production design are described as cheap and uninspired, failing to create a convincing magical atmosphere. | |
| Theme | Opinions on the film's tone are split: some see it as a misguided, depressing slog, while a minority interpret it as a brave, albeit flawed, psychological exploration of how children cope with trauma through imagination. | |
| Culture | The casting and inclusion of diverse protagonists spark significant disagreement, with some viewers praising the modern representation and others attacking the casting choices as forced or historically inconsistent. |
