Key opinion
Dark Nuns is a grounded, slow-burn take on exorcism that attempts to blend Catholic ritual with Korean cultural elements. While it succeeds in portraying a menacing demonic presence, it is ultimately hampered by repetitive plotting, an bloated runtime, and a lack of depth in character development.
| Originality | The film excels at building a genuinely threatening and manipulative demonic presence through intelligent dialogue. | |
| Theme | The thematic blend of Catholicism with Korean Shamanism and the juxtaposition of medical versus religious explanations provide an interesting, realistic foundation. | |
| Originality | The narrative structure feels derivative, relying on recycled plot beats and twists that mirror its predecessor, 'Black Priests'. | |
| Theme | Character motivations, particularly the protagonist's, lack sufficient background, rendering the emotional payoff of her arc shallow. | |
| Pacing | The three-hour runtime and inclusion of unnecessary subplots and jarring sequences dilute the film's core focus. |
