Description
Two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, glide through the streets of Berlin, observing the bustling population, providing invisible rays of hope to the distressed but never interacting with them. When Damiel falls in love with lonely trapeze artist Marion, the angel longs to experience life in the physical world, and finds — with some words of wisdom from actor Peter Falk — that it might be possible for him to take human form.

Key opinion
Wings of Desire is widely hailed as a profound philosophical masterpiece that uses the story of an angel choosing mortality to explore the beauty of the human experience. While many viewers find its meditative pace and visual poetry deeply moving, a minority of critics find the deliberate, intellectual approach to be slow or disconnected.
| Cinematography | The cinematography, utilizing high-contrast monochrome to represent the angels' perspective, creates a powerful and tactile visual experience. | |
| Theme | The film succeeds as a deep, existential meditation that elevates ordinary human sensory details into something profound and meaningful. | |
| Acting | Bruno Ganz delivers a compelling and anchor-like performance that grounds the abstract premise of his angelic character. | |
| Pacing | The contemplative, slow-moving tempo rewards viewers seeking an introspective experience, though it strikes others as tedious and lacking in conventional narrative momentum. |
