Key opinion
Disobedience is a character-driven drama that examines the tension between religious tradition and personal autonomy through the lens of a repressed lesbian relationship. While most critics praise the nuanced performances of Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, opinions regarding the film's pacing and emotional depth remain divided.
| Acting | Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams deliver transformative, emotionally resonant performances that elevate the material. | |
| Cinematography | The cinematography uses a muted, oppressive color palette and tight framing to effectively mirror the characters' internal confinement. | |
| Direction | Lelio's direction is praised for its precision and restraint in handling delicate themes, though some critics find the film emotionally detached. | |
| Pacing | The film's slow, contemplative pacing is viewed by some as an immersive stylistic choice, while others perceive it as stagnant and boring. | |
| Screenplay | Critics are polarized over the intimate scenes, which some see as essential expressions of desire and others dismiss as forced or gratuitous. |
