Key opinion
Dogman is a grim, atmospheric crime drama that functions as a modern fable about the dehumanizing effects of a desolate, crime-ridden environment. The film is widely praised for its powerhouse lead performance, though audiences remain divided on the protagonist's questionable decision-making and the bleak, nihilistic nature of the narrative.
| Acting | Marcello Fonte provides a masterful, physically expressive performance that anchors the film's emotional core. | |
| Production | The cinematography effectively captures a decaying, provincial Italy, stripping away romanticized notions of the country. | |
| Direction | Matteo Garrone delivers a stark, minimalist direction that balances social realism with a fable-like, philosophical tone. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is often perceived as an evocative meditation on human dignity, though some find the protagonist's submissive, self-destructive behavior frustrating and difficult to empathize with. | |
| Ending | The ending is frequently viewed as a haunting, hollow conclusion that emphasizes the protagonist's tragic loss of self and dignity. |
