Key opinion
Duelist is a visually driven, highly stylized work that prioritizes aesthetic beauty and dance-like choreography over traditional narrative coherence. While the film’s dreamlike atmosphere and artistic execution earn high praise from some, others find the plot thin, confusing, and distractingly secondary to the director's experimental form.
| Direction | The sword-fight choreography is elevated into hypnotic, graceful dance sequences that define the film's visual identity. | |
| Acting | Kang Dong-won provides a captivating, understated performance that anchors the film through his expressive gaze and commanding presence. | |
| Score | The score and lighting are masterfully utilized to create a romantic, mystical, and emotionally resonant atmosphere. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is widely criticized for being vague, tangled, and overly simplistic, often feeling like an afterthought to the visual style. | |
| Acting | Opinions on Ha Ji-won’s performance are divided; some view her raw, theatrical portrayal as a fascinating character choice, while others find it unappealing and out of sync with her co-star. | |
| Originality | The film's tone is polarizing, as viewers weigh the merits of its pure artistic ambition against its distracting inclusion of idiosyncratic humor and parodic elements. |
