Key opinion
Empire State is a crime drama based on the 1982 New York armored-car heist that divides viewers between those who appreciate its grounded, gritty exploration of social mobility and those who find it dull and logically flawed. While the performances of Dwayne Johnson and the leads garner some praise, the film is widely criticized for uneven character development and a narrative that fails to sustain engagement.
| Acting | Dwayne Johnson delivers a solid, noteworthy performance as the detective that helps anchor the otherwise mediocre production. | |
| Screenplay | The film's reliance on illogical character decisions and amateurish narrative choices makes the central heist and the protagonists' motivations feel frustratingly implausible. | |
| Direction | Director Dito Montiel succeeds in capturing an authentic 1980s Brooklyn atmosphere and social critique, though he fails to reach the heights of his cinematic influences. | |
| Acting | The performances of Liam Hemsworth and Michael Angarano are polarizing, with some viewers finding them competent and others viewing the character portrayals as dull or weak-minded. | |
| Pacing | The film's pacing is criticized as uneven and dialogue-heavy, resulting in a tedious experience that fails to deliver the high-octane action implied by its marketing. |
