Escaflowne (2000) is widely regarded as a visually stunning experience that fails to match its artistic ambition with a cohesive narrative. While the cinematography and animation receive praise for their inventiveness, the film is consistently criticized for its underdeveloped characters and a screenplay that feels rushed and hollow.
| Cinematography | The film excels in visual presentation, utilizing inventive cinematography and unique character designs that stand out from typical anime aesthetics. | |
| Acting | The characters are criticized for being shallow, underdeveloped, and lacking the emotional complexity required to sustain the drama. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative relies heavily on generic genre clichés and fails to provide philosophical depth or meaningful motivation for its antagonists. | |
