Key opinion
Ex Machina is widely praised as a taut, intellectually stimulating piece of minimalist science fiction that masterfully explores AI ethics and human hubris. While the performances, particularly by Alicia Vikander, are almost universally acclaimed, the film's conclusion and the characterization of the lead scientist spark some debate among viewers.
| Acting | Alicia Vikander delivers a breakthrough, transformative performance that effectively captures the emergence of consciousness. | |
| Production | The film successfully sustains tension and depth by utilizing a minimalist, claustrophobic setting and a grounded, Hitchcockian tone. | |
| Theme | Alex Garland creates a timely, thought-provoking examination of AI morality and the consequences of playing god. | |
| Pacing | The deliberately slow, meditative pacing rewards those seeking a tense psychological duel, though some viewers find it too quiet or lacking in momentum. | |
| Screenplay | The characterization of Nathan is debated, with some finding him a compelling, complex antagonist and others viewing him as a clichéd or underwhelming 'genius' trope. | |
| Ending | The ending remains a point of contention, characterized by some as a bold, striking twist and by others as irresponsible or narratively unsatisfying. |
