Key opinion
Falling in Love is a polarizing character-driven drama that relies almost entirely on the delicate performances of Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro. While many viewers find the film’s minimalist, slow-burn approach deeply moving and realistic, others criticize the thin, coincidental plot and the lack of chemistry between the leads.
| Acting | Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep deliver masterful, vulnerable, and nuanced performances that anchor the entire film. | |
| Direction | Ulu Grosbard’s minimalist, restrained direction successfully creates an intimate and authentic atmosphere that favors emotional truth over spectacle. | |
| Pacing | The film’s slow, deliberate pacing creates a contemplative experience for some, while others find the narrative draggy and devoid of excitement. | |
| Screenplay | The script is viewed either as a refreshing, realistic depiction of adult longing or as a thin, cliché-ridden narrative hinged on unconvincing coincidences. | |
| Emotion | The depiction of the protagonists' extramarital affair creates a divide: some viewers find the moral conflict and emotional stakes deeply empathetic, while others perceive the characters as unsympathetic and their choices as unconvincing. |
