Key opinion
Flags of Our Fathers is a sobering, unconventional war drama that critiques the political exploitation of soldiers rather than glorifying combat. While viewers largely praise its honest, unvarnished depiction of trauma and media manipulation, opinions are divided on the film's structural cohesion and whether it successfully sustains emotional depth.
| Theme | The film is widely praised for its cynical, insightful exploration of how war heroes are manufactured and exploited for political and commercial gain. | |
| Direction | The battle sequences are frequently commended for their gritty, realistic portrayal of combat, successfully avoiding the tropes of stereotypical superhero-style heroism. | |
| Acting | The performances receive mixed reviews, with some critics praising Phillippe and Pepper as effective anchors, while others argue the character work is inconsistent or miscast. | |
| Editing | The narrative structure and editing are subjects of disagreement, with some viewers finding the cross-cutting between past and present compelling and others finding it disjointed and confusing. | |
| Score | The musical score is a point of contention, with some viewers finding Eastwood's original work effective, while others describe it as weak or underwhelming. |
