Key opinion
Full Contact is recognized as a quintessential piece of Hong Kong's "heroic bloodshed" era that stands apart from Western action norms. While some viewers find its narrative and screenplay derivative, the film's unique aesthetic and visceral direction cement its status as a notable, if slightly unconventional, genre entry.
| Direction | Ringo Lam’s kinetic and dark directorial style provides a distinct visual identity that elevates the film above standard action fare. | |
| Originality | The film functions as a compelling transition point from traditional heroic bloodshed to a grittier, post-heroic style of action filmmaking. | |
| Acting | Chow Yun-fat delivers an iconic and charismatic performance that anchors the film despite some awkward character beats. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is viewed as a weak point, relying heavily on standard American crime clichés rather than original storytelling. |
