Key opinion
Going the Distance is a polarizing romantic comedy that oscillates between sincere portrayals of long-distance relationships and reliance on crude, low-brow humor. While some viewers find the lead performances and emotional stakes refreshing, others criticize the film for its shallow plot, uneven tone, and over-the-top supporting characters.
| Score | The indie-rock soundtrack effectively captures the relaxed and romantic mood of the film. | |
| Theme | The film delivers an optimistic and earnest look at the challenges and rewards of maintaining a relationship across geographic distance. | |
| Acting | The performances from Drew Barrymore and Justin Long are viewed as either an effective, sincere pairing or a mismatched, unconvincing screen couple. | |
| Humor | The comedy relies on a divisive mix of raunchy, vulgar humor that some find entertaining and others find forced, grotesque, or juvenile. | |
| Ending | The plot follows a predictable, formulaic trajectory, leading to a conclusion that some praise for its romantic optimism and others dismiss as an implausible, forced fairy-tale ending. |
