Key opinion
High Tension is a stylized, old-school Hong Kong-style action film that relies heavily on Andy Lau's charismatic performance to anchor its otherwise predictable hijack premise. While the film delivers effective, gritty combat sequences, it ultimately suffers from narrative shortcuts and unresolved subplots that undermine its emotional weight.
| Acting | Andy Lau anchors the film with a physically proficient and heroic performance that defines the production's tone. | |
| Direction | The film leans into a hyper-realist, bloody, and visually striking aesthetic reminiscent of classic Hong Kong action cinema. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is burdened by abandoned narrative threads and superficial character development, leaving key motivations and subplots entirely unaddressed. | |
| Pacing | The decision to sacrifice complex character moments for a faster pace creates a divide: some value the relentless momentum, while others find the resulting lack of depth frustrating. |
