Key opinion
I Am Legend is widely celebrated for Will Smith's compelling performance and its hauntingly immersive portrayal of post-apocalyptic isolation. While many viewers praise the film's atmospheric direction and emotional weight, it is frequently criticized for diverging significantly from the source material and struggling with a third-act shift toward generic genre tropes.
| Acting | Will Smith delivers a powerful, nuanced performance that effectively anchors the film's intense focus on psychological isolation. | |
| Cinematography | The cinematography successfully captures the haunting beauty and scale of a desolate, overgrown New York City. | |
| Emotion | The film creates a palpable sense of existential dread and genuine emotional connection, particularly in the relationship between the protagonist and his dog. | |
| Direction | The direction excels at building tension and atmosphere during the quiet, solitary sequences of the first half. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is viewed as inconsistent, effectively exploring themes of loneliness in the beginning but devolving into predictable action-movie clichés by the conclusion. | |
| Adaptation | The adaptation is divisive, with some appreciating its unique take on the premise while many book fans find it a shallow departure from the source material's intellectual depth. |
