Key opinion
If I Stay is a polarizing teen melodrama that succeeds as an emotional, music-filled tear-jerker for its target teenage audience while frustrating viewers looking for depth. While the soundtrack and select supporting performances receive consistent praise, the film's reliance on clichés and uneven narrative execution leads to sharp divisions regarding its overall quality.
| Score | The soundtrack effectively blends classical cello pieces with rock music to enhance the film's emotional tone. | |
| Acting | Stacy Keach delivers a standout, moving performance as the grandfather that resonates as the film's emotional anchor. | |
| Editing | The narrative structure, which relies on a constant oscillation between past flashbacks and the present coma, is viewed by some as an effective character study and by others as disjointed and jarring. | |
| Acting | Chloe Grace Moretz's performance is debated: supporters appreciate her sincerity in grief, while critics find her portrayal of the lead character emotionally flat or inconsistent. | |
| Screenplay | The script is criticized for being overly formulaic and reliant on manipulative, shallow tropes that cater exclusively to a young adult demographic. |
