Key opinion
This adaptation of the classic novel is widely praised for its visceral, technically masterful portrayal of the horrors of WWI and its stark anti-war message. However, it divides audiences and critics regarding its fidelity to the source material, with some viewers finding the narrative structure and character development lacking compared to the book.
| Cinematography | The cinematography effectively captures the bleakness and squalor of trench warfare through immersive visuals. | |
| Acting | Felix Kammerer provides a compelling performance, grounding the film with an evolving, expressive portrayal of a soldier's descent into trauma. | |
| Score | The film's score is a point of contention: many find its synthetic, industrial tone effective, while others argue it feels intrusive and anachronistic. | |
| Adaptation | The adaptation takes significant creative liberties, frustrating those who expected a faithful retelling of Remarque's novel, while others view it as a powerful independent interpretation. | |
| Screenplay | The decision to condense complex character arcs into a shorter runtime results in secondary characters feeling under-developed and flat. |
