Key opinion
In Secret is a visually evocative period drama that succeeds in recreating a dark, gothic atmosphere through strong production design and cinematography. However, critical consensus is split on its adaptation of Émile Zola’s work, with many reviewers feeling the film simplifies the novel's complex psychological intensity into a superficial melodrama.
| Production | The film excels in its gothic production design, makeup, and atmospheric cinematography, creating a hauntingly dark and realistic 1860s Paris. | |
| Acting | The lead cast, particularly Elizabeth Olsen and Jessica Lange, delivers strong performances that anchor the intense, tragic narrative. | |
| Pacing | The pacing is often criticized for dragging, resulting in an uneven narrative flow that makes the film feel overly long or occasionally boring. | |
| Adaptation | Opinions on the screenplay are divided: some praise the faithful preservation of period dialogue and detail, while others argue it strips away the psychological depth and 'animalistic' turmoil present in Zola's original novel. |
