On the outskirts of town, the hard-nosed Vienna owns a saloon frequented by the undesirables of the region, including Dancin' Kid and his gang. Another patron of Vienna's establishment is Johnny Guitar, a former gunslinger and her lover. When a heist is pulled in town that results in a man's death, Emma Small, Vienna's rival, rallies the townsfolk to take revenge on Vienna's saloon – even without proof of her wrongdoing.

Johnny Guitar is a radical, visually striking revisionist Western that subverts genre norms by placing complex female protagonists at its center. While it has achieved cult status for its bold aesthetic and allegorical depth, some viewers find its melodramatic tone and theatrical staging to be dated or artificial.

Originality The film fundamentally challenges traditional Western tropes by marginalizing male characters and centering the narrative on the intense rivalry between two formidable women.
Acting Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge deliver commanding performances that dominate the screen and anchor the film's psychological weight.
Production The production utilizes a bold, vibrant, and stage-like color palette that gives the film a unique, surreal visual identity.
Screenplay The screenplay is praised for its clever subversion of power dynamics and political allegory, though others criticize it for excessive melodrama and schematic plot points.
Direction The film’s theatrical, stylized approach divides audiences: some celebrate its bold originality, while others feel it comes across as artificial, stilted, or overly sentimental.
