Key opinion
Judy is widely regarded as a conventional, somewhat shallow biopic that succeeds almost exclusively due to Renée Zellweger's transformative and powerful lead performance. While critics praise the film's technical proficiency and empathetic portrayal of Garland's personal tragedy, many feel the narrative fails to provide deep insight into the icon's life beyond her public struggle.
| Acting | Renée Zellweger delivers a phenomenal, career-defining performance that elevates the material and captures Garland's vulnerability and talent. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is frequently criticized as trite, thin, and formulaic, failing to offer a profound or original exploration of Garland's life. | |
| Originality | The film functions primarily as an awards-focused vehicle that prioritizes a polished, conventional presentation over a truly insightful or comprehensive biographical account. | |
| Pacing | Opinions on the film's structure and pacing are divided; some appreciate the use of flashbacks to provide context on studio exploitation, while others find the narrative flow uneven and the runtime overextended. |
