Key opinion
Kubo and the Two Strings is widely hailed as a technical masterpiece of stop-motion animation, praised for its breathtaking visual craftsmanship and emotional depth. While most critics find the story moving and philosophically resonant, a minority of reviewers feel the narrative is formulaic and the moral lessons are presented with heavy-handedness.
| Production | The stop-motion animation represents a pinnacle of the medium, blending traditional craftsmanship with advanced digital techniques to create a visually stunning, immersive world. | |
| Acting | The voice cast, particularly the chemistry between Theron and McConaughey, provides strong performances that ground the characters in both humor and warmth. | |
| Score | The score effectively balances the film's lighter, whimsical moments with its darker, menacing mythological elements. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative divides audiences: some find the story a poignant, resonant exploration of grief and memory, while others describe it as a predictable and thin quest structure. | |
| Theme | The film's attempts to impart life lessons are perceived by some as profound and heart-wrenching, whereas others criticize them as blunt, heavy-handed propaganda. |
