Key opinion
Lars and the Real Girl is widely celebrated as a tender, humanist drama that uses an unconventional premise to explore themes of loneliness and community empathy. While most viewers are moved by the film's sincerity and central performance, some critics find the narrative pacing slow or the premise too far-fetched to be credible.
| Acting | Ryan Gosling delivers a superb, naturalistic performance that grounds the film's eccentric premise in genuine vulnerability. | |
| Theme | The film offers a profoundly sincere and humanist exploration of how collective empathy and patience can facilitate personal healing. | |
| Pacing | The narrative tempo is polarizing; some find it a contemplative, rewarding experience, while others perceive it as slow, boring, or lacking sufficient intrigue. | |
| Originality | The premise is viewed by some as a touching, allegorical fable about overcoming isolation, while others reject it as unrealistic and lacking in logical credibility regarding social reactions. |
