Description
A philistine in the art film business, Jeremy Prokosch is a producer unhappy with the work of his director. Prokosch has hired Fritz Lang to direct an adaptation of "The Odyssey," but when it seems that the legendary filmmaker is making a picture destined to bomb at the box office, he brings in a screenwriter to energize the script. The professional intersects with the personal when a rift develops between the writer and his wife.

Key opinion
Le Mépris is widely regarded as a visually striking, intellectually dense exploration of marital alienation and the compromises of the film industry. While many viewers praise its aesthetic ambition and atmospheric depth, opinions remain polarized regarding its narrative coherence, character motivations, and the stylistic choices of the score.
| Cinematography | The film excels as a visual spectacle, utilizing minimalist framing and a deliberate, vibrant color palette that remains impressive to modern audiences. | |
| Acting | Brigitte Bardot delivers an understated and compelling performance, effectively embodying the existential weight and emotional distance central to the film's themes. | |
| Theme | The narrative's integration of Odyssey motifs and meta-commentary on the film industry creates a sophisticated, albeit intentionally cold, intellectual experience. | |
| Score | The unconventional use of Georges Delerue’s score—characterized by jarring, abrupt stops and starts—is perceived by some as an evocative reflection of the film's emotional discord, while others find it distracting and poorly implemented. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is praised for its complex dialogue and psychological nuances, yet critics argue that the character interactions often feel unmotivated, contrived, or emotionally hollow. | |
| Editing | The film's technical execution, including its editing and sound design, draws both admiration for its bold, experimental rejection of classic narrative flow and criticism for feeling disjointed or unpolished. |
