Key opinion
Les Fruits de la passion is a polarizing, avant-garde adaptation of the Story of O that strips away conventional eroticism in favor of dark, psychological, and symbolic explorations of the ego. While some viewers appreciate its poetic depth and thematic ambition, others find the film emotionally distant, disjointed, and lacking the intended passionate intensity.
| Emotion | The film intentionally abandons traditional eroticism, replacing physical arousal with a disquieting atmosphere of psychological repression and existential pity. | |
| Theme | The narrative successfully utilizes a 1920s Hong Kong setting to weave complex Eastern and Western philosophical symbols concerning ego dissolution. | |
| Adaptation | The adaptation takes significant liberties with the source material, shifting the focus from the original's erotic structure to a dark, paternal-fixated drama. | |
| Acting | Klaus Kinski delivers a commanding, demonic performance that serves as the film's anchor, though his style stands in jarring contrast to the rest of the cast. |
