Key opinion
Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Misérables divides opinion through its ambitious, sung-through musical format and unconventional cinematography. While many praise the emotional performances and high production values, others find the long runtime and intense close-ups to be exhausting or aesthetically questionable.
| Acting | Anne Hathaway delivers a standout, career-defining performance in her raw rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream'. | |
| Production | The production design and costume departments successfully recreate 19th-century France with lavish, high-quality detail. | |
| Pacing | The sung-through musical structure, while faithful to the source material, creates a divisive experience ranging from immersive emotional depth to tedious, wall-to-wall singing. | |
| Acting | Russell Crowe’s vocal performance and casting as Javert polarize viewers between those who find his approach grounded and those who find it lacking the necessary intensity. | |
| Cinematography | Cinematography relying on constant, intrusive close-ups and shaky camera work is perceived by some as visceral and by others as aesthetically jarring or cheap. |
