Key opinion
Missing in Action is widely regarded as a quintessential, low-budget 1980s action vehicle that serves as a polarizing example of the era's jingoistic war tropes. While fans embrace its straightforward entertainment value and charismatic lead performance, critics frequently dismiss it as a derivative, poorly produced B-movie with a simplistic script.
| Acting | M. Emmet Walsh delivers a consistently reliable and enjoyable supporting performance. | |
| Screenplay | The plot is frequently criticized as being thin, derivative, and secondary to the spectacle of gunplay and explosions. | |
| Production | Production values are poor, characterized by cheap effects and fake-looking sets that reveal the film's B-movie status. | |
| Acting | Chuck Norris is viewed through a polarized lens; admirers see him as a compelling, charismatic icon, while detractors find his performance one-dimensional and physically implausible. | |
| Culture | Opinions on the film's cultural and political themes diverge sharply; some view it as a timely, resonant critique of war trauma and governmental neglect, while others condemn it as jingoistic, caricatured, and overly reliant on American myths. |
