Key opinion
Mortal Engines is widely regarded as a visually spectacular achievement that suffers from a fractured, predictable, and overly dense screenplay. While audiences are divided on whether the impressive world-building and steampunk aesthetic compensate for its narrative shortcomings, most agree that the film struggles to balance its ambitious scope within its runtime.
| Production | The film features meticulously crafted steampunk visuals and scale that rival high-budget fantasy epics like The Lord of the Rings. | |
| Acting | The character of Shrike, the disfigured cyborg, serves as the most compelling and emotionally resonant element of the story. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is criticized for relying on tired genre clichés, predictable plot trajectories, and thin character backstories. | |
| Runtime | The expansive world-building feels constrained by the two-hour runtime, leaving viewers with unanswered questions about the logic of the predator cities. | |
| Pacing | Opinions on pacing are split: some find the relentless, action-heavy travelogue engaging, while others view it as a disjointed and exhausting experience. |
