Key opinion
Mulan (2020) is a polarizing adaptation that frequently struggles to balance the legacy of the 1998 animation with its goal of being a grounded war drama. While many viewers appreciate the film's visual scale and production design, it is widely criticized for a disjointed script and the removal of beloved elements like Mushu and the musical numbers.
| Production | The production design, costumes, and overall cinematography provide a consistently vibrant and aesthetically pleasing representation of ancient China. | |
| Acting | The cast, led by Liu Yifei, delivers competent and charismatic performances that anchor the film's more dramatic ambitions. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is viewed as thin and poorly paced, suffering from an over-reliance on clichéd tropes and a lack of character development. | |
| Adaptation | The decision to abandon the musical format and character dynamics of the 1998 original alienates long-time fans who miss the charm and humor of the source material. | |
| Theme | The use of 'Qi' as a narrative device is divisive: some find it a compelling way to explore Mulan's hidden potential, while others argue it is an poorly explained plot shortcut that undermines her personal growth. | |
| Direction | The action choreography divides opinion, with some praising the spectacular scale of the sequences while others label them as overly CGI-dependent and lacking physical stakes. |
