Mulan II is generally considered a weaker sequel that sacrifices the original's epic scale and cultural depth for a simpler, romance-driven plot. While many criticize the loss of character essence and a thin screenplay, some viewers still find the music and animation pleasant.

Screenplay The screenplay is thin and predictable, prioritizing romantic subplots over the original's epic stakes
Acting Li Shang and Mushu lose the grandeur and personality established by the original voice work
Score The soundtrack remains pleasant and competent, maintaining a sense of consistency
Theme The shift toward a 'follow your heart' philosophy is seen by some as a meaningful emotional evolution, while others view it as a shallow abandonment of honor and duty
Production Opinions on the visual style are split between those who find the animation crisp and others who find it cheap and flat
