Key opinion
New York Stories is an uneven anthology where three legendary directors offer distinct, character-driven vignettes that only loosely cohere around the setting of Manhattan. While Scorsese's segment is widely hailed as the most compelling and cinematically accomplished, the contributions from Coppola and Allen elicit sharply polarized reactions regarding their tone and narrative substance.
| Acting | Nick Nolte’s portrayal of a volatile, obsessive painter serves as the project's dramatic anchor and standout performance. | |
| Direction | Scorsese’s direction provides the anthology's most cohesive and visually arresting segment, effectively using music and camera movement to capture the artist's internal turmoil. | |
| Originality | Opinions on Coppola’s segment are divided; some critics find its whimsical, fairytale tone atmospheric, while others dismiss it as a hollow and misplaced outlier. | |
| Humor | Woody Allen’s contribution is perceived as a classic, dialogue-driven comedy that satisfies fans of his signature style while feeling tonally disconnected from the more serious vignettes. |
