Key opinion
Open Season is a visually vibrant but narratively derivative animated film that relies heavily on standard tropes of the 'odd-couple' adventure. While some viewers find its high-energy humor and localizations charming, others criticize the film for its reliance on crude, low-brow gags and thin, unoriginal character archetypes.
| Acting | The Russian voice acting, particularly the performance of Mikhail Boyarsky, significantly elevates the film, turning small roles into memorable highlights. | |
| Screenplay | The film utilizes a highly predictable and derivative plot structure that relies on well-worn 'odd-couple' archetypes seen in earlier hits like Shrek or Ice Age. | |
| Humor | Opinions on the humor are deeply divided; some find it energetic and witty due to localized translation, while others condemn it as overly crude, vulgar, and unnecessarily scatological. | |
| Production | The quality of the animation is contentious, with some praising its vibrant and colorful forest environments, while others dismiss the CGI as cheap, flat, and dated. |
