Key opinion
Origin: Spirits of the Past is widely praised for its lush visual world-building and evocative musical score. However, critics are divided over the narrative, with many finding the plot predictable and derivative of better works by Hayao Miyazaki, while others appreciate its earnest, though simple, philosophical message.
| Production | The film features stunning, high-quality animation that brings the lush post-apocalyptic landscapes and sentient forest to life. | |
| Score | The musical score is a standout highlight, consistently praised as superb and enjoyable regardless of one's feelings on the story. | |
| Originality | The narrative relies on tropes and structures heavily reminiscent of Miyazaki classics like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, leading to accusations of unoriginality. | |
| Screenplay | Character development is frequently cited as shallow, with many viewers finding the protagonists lack depth and personality. | |
| Pacing | Opinions on the pacing are split: some find the film sluggish and boring, while others believe the contemplative, calm tempo successfully serves the environmental themes. |
