Key opinion
Peeping Tom is a groundbreaking psychological thriller that explores the dark intersection of voyeurism, trauma, and the cinematic gaze. While initially vilified by critics for its provocative empathy toward a serial killer, it has since been re-evaluated as an influential masterpiece of 20th-century cinema.
| Acting | Karlheinz Böhm’s performance masterfully balances chilling psychopathy with a sympathetic, fragile vulnerability that forces the audience to engage with his distorted worldview. | |
| Cinematography | The cinematography uses a vivid, lurid color palette and pioneering POV shots to implicate the viewer in the act of voyeurism, effectively turning the camera into a weapon. | |
| Theme | Michael Powell’s direction provides a deep, unflinching psychological study of child abuse and voyeuristic obsession that remains thematically sharp and relevant today. | |
| Culture | The film’s legacy as a seminal influence on the horror genre and future directors like Scorsese and Argento is widely recognized by contemporary critics. | |
| Screenplay | Opinions on the film's structural impact are divided; while many praise its innovation and psychological depth, some viewers find the plot conventional, lacking in suspense, or diluted by the saturation of modern slasher tropes. |
