Each year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria, Arizona explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 residents for the annual Spring Break celebration. But then, an earthquake opens an underwater chasm, releasing an enormous swarm of ancient Piranha that have been dormant for thousands of years, now with a taste for human flesh. This year, there's something more to worry about than the usual hangovers and complaints from locals, a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.

Piranha 3D is a self-aware, gore-heavy exploitation film that prioritizes visceral spectacle, humor, and nudity over traditional suspense or complex narrative. Opinions are sharply divided, with some viewers embracing its intentional 'trash' aesthetic as a fun, well-executed popcorn movie, while others dismiss it as a shallow, repulsive, and uninspired clone of the genre's greats.

Originality The film succeeds as a self-aware, intentional 'trash' spectacle that delivers extreme gore and high-energy thrills for its target audience.
Production The visual effects and creature design for the piranhas are largely considered convincing and realistically rendered.
Acting The acting is widely viewed as secondary, with the cast primarily serving as eye candy or archetypal fodder rather than providing nuanced performances.
Screenplay The plot is frequently criticized as being simplistic, unoriginal, and overly reliant on familiar genre tropes.
Cinematography The use of 3D is contentious, with some finding it an effective enhancement to the gore, while others feel it adds little value or is occasionally unnecessary.
Emotion The film's reliance on excessive, gratuitous nudity and shock-value violence polarizes viewers, delighting fans of extreme cinema while alienating those seeking traditional horror substance.
